While we all are still in midst of a pandemic which has taught us so many life lessons and skills, I felt the need to teach my little one about environment more than ever. And what better way to educate our kids via books !!
When I was reading these books to my daughter, I was surprised at how few of them addressed the issues that I knew were important for her learn from a very young age.
In this post, we would like to recommend some of our favourite environment books for kids.
1. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
If you don’t read out this book to your child, you will live with the sin of not telling one of the most wonderful tales to your child. It’s a bittersweet story of a selfless giving tree and the relationship with a boy and how they “grow up” together…it’s very sad and also depicts what man has done to nature đ
The theme of the story is that of human greed and endless desire; and also of nature’s abundant generosity.
Although the book is only black and white, I am sure you will enjoy going through the pages.
2. The Lorax: The classic story that shows you how to save the planet! by Dr. SeussÂ
This book is not just a children’s book but so much more! Each one of us should have this as a staple in their home. It is so relevant to the world today that it is almost difficult to believe that it was written in 1971, 45 years ago.
This is a really good book for introducing children to what happens when we abuse our environment. Perfect book for today’s society. It discusses and clearly shows how the destruction of one thing can impact the entire eco system around it.
âUnless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, no itâs not.â
This quote says it all for me. The best verse in town, wonderful illustrations and an honest look at what we are doing to our world â with a message that we can make the decision to change at any moment.
3. 365 Nature Stories by Ranjit Lal
365 nature stories, a one-of-a-kind book, is a deft and delightful compilation of miniature stories on animals and birds to trees and the environment. And more.
It brings to you the unknown, unusual, mysterious, and whacky to bizarre aspects of nature. These nature stories will not only enrich you with amazing facts and remarkable information but will also entertain and enthrall you with their inexhaustible wit and range. The natural world in all its richness.
The vivid illustrations on each page accompanying the easy flow of words makes the understanding of the text simple and interesting. From each page of the book, the child learns exciting new terms.
4.The Unexpected Visitor â Picture Book by Jessica Courtney-Tickle
This is a stunningly beautiful and warm-hearted picture book all about the friendship between a fisherman and whale.
This picture book is the perfect way to introduce the notion of sharing, sustainability and taking care of the creatures in our oceans with young children ages 3 years and up.
5. Clean Up! by Nathan Bryon & Dapo Adeola
A short and sweet story about a little girl, Rocket who is off on holiday with her family to visit her grandparents in the Caribbean. Find out how she initiates the cleaning process on the beach where her grandparents lived which is littered by visitors and how everyone joins her.
The little ones will also learn that if everyone contributes in keeping the environment clean, the WORLD WILL BE A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE IN.
5. Charlie and Lola: Look After Your Planet by Lauren Child
Lola is clearing out some of her old things because she does not want her bedroom to ever get as messy and pongy as Marv’s older brother Marty’s bedroom – yuk! Charlie persuades Lola that instead of throwing her things away, she should recycle them. ‘Recycle it? What is that?’ asks Lola.
With a bit of help from Charlie, Lola learns all about recycling and how it is extremely very important to look after our planet. Soon she has found an extra-specially fun way to do more recycling – and gets lots of her classmates to join in too!
Pictures in the book are brightly-illustrated, simply-told story that gets an important point across without being too preachy.
There’s also detachable tree-and-leaf poster that acts as a reward chart for your child’s efforts.
These books are recommended for age groups from 3 to 7. Hope your lil one likes these books.
